The covers of Aalto University Doctoral Theses
Aalto University publication series,
Doctoral Theses
The design of Aalto University dissertations will change at the beginning of 2025.
The covers follow the university's visual identity, and they are always typeset at Unigrafia. No changes are made to the cover templates.
Aalto ARTS publishes dissertations with a special design in the dissertation series a few times a year.
There are five cover templates available and nine different color options. Before placing your dissertation order with Unigrafia, decide which template you want to use and select its color. Please note that when printed on a four-color printing press, the color shades may differ slightly from what appears on the screen.
The title will be typeset in lowercase letters, with only the first letter of the first word capitalized, not every word. The title will be typeset from your title page. The main title will be in a bolder font, and the subtitle in a thinner font.
1. First, choose a cover template from the five options
The first option is completely without images. The top of the cover is white, and the bottom features your chosen background color along with the university's logo.
In the second option, the bottom of the cover includes a black standard element next to the background color. The size and position of the black element are fixed. The logo is placed at the bottom.
In the third option, the cover features a horizontal image, approximately 180 mm x 130 mm in size. A few millimeters of the image extend beyond the right edge and bottom to the trim area of the cover.
In the fourth option, there is a vertical image. The original image should be about 95 mm wide and 130 mm tall, with a few millimeters extending beyond the edges to the trim area.

The fifth option features a cover with two images. One of the images is a vertical image on the right, and the other, a smaller horizontal image, is placed on the left side of it.
The adjacent image also shows the back cover. The back cover includes the series name, ISBN numbers, and your university and department.
If you wish, we can add a short introduction (max. 922 characters) about your research to the top of the back cover. Otherwise, the top of the back cover will remain white.

2. Then, select the background color
The colors used in the cover templates are the university's brand colors. You can freely choose any color, it is not necessary to use your own school´s brand color.
The options are: Yellow (as shown in the examples above), as well as Red, Blue, Purple, Lilac, Emerald, Sunny Yellow, Light Green, and Orange. Please note that the printed colors may differ from the screen shades.
